Puffy Hoop Earrings in 14K Yellow Gold

Hoops start being visible from behind at roughly this size. At 27.00mm tall and 25.00mm across, the curve extends past the edge of the lobe far enough to be seen in profile and from the back of a room, which is a different job from an earring that only works when someone is looking directly at your face.

Getting there without a weight penalty is the puffed section's doing. The hoop is a rounded hollow form rather than a solid band, so 4.6 grams of gold buys a diameter that would cost several times that in a solid bar. The rounded face also keeps the reflection moving, throwing a bright line that runs the length of the hoop and shifts along it as you turn. Hollow is not the same as fragile at this wall thickness. What it does mean is that a hard enough knock can push the hoop out of round, where a solid band of this diameter would simply be too heavy to wear all day.

A hinged snap back holds it closed. On a hoop this large the hinge does real work, since the closure has to stop a big ring from levering itself open against the back of the ear.
