Gold jewellery is judged on four things, and karat number is only the first. Karat sets gold content: 14K is 58.5 percent gold and the hardest common alloy, 18K is 75 percent and softer, 24K is too soft for most wear. Alloy composition decides colour and skin behaviour. 2. Gold Alloys: Colour, Composition & Chemistry

Gold’s colour, hardness, and corrosion resistance are determined by what it is alloyed with. White gold, yellow gold, and rose gold all share the same gold content at a given karat — the difference is entirely in the alloying metals.

Yellow Gold

3. Durability, Hardness & Wear Over Time

Gold’s Mohs hardness of 2.5–3 is often misunderstood. Mohs measures scratch resistance from a sharp point — it does not measure indentation hardness, yield strength, or abrasion resistance, which are the properties that actually determine how jewelry holds up over years of wear.

Hardness Metrics

Vickers hardness (HV) is more relevant than Mohs for jewelry. Pure gold: ~25 HV. 14K yellow gold: ~120–150 HV. 18K yellow gold: ~130–160 HV. Work-hardened alloys can reach 200+ HV. Higher HV = better resistance to deformation and surface damage.

Wear Patterns by Jewelry Type

Rings wear fastest (constant friction, impact). Bracelets experience abrasion on the outer surface. Chains wear at links and clasps. Earrings and pendants wear slowest. Prongs on rings need inspection every 1–2 years.

Gold jewelry is primarily a wearable with a value floor — not a financial investment. Understanding the economics of gold jewelry helps you buy smarter and set realistic expectations for resale.

Melt Value (Floor Value)

Every gold piece has a melt value: gold weight × purity × spot price − refining costs. This is the minimum a piece is worth regardless of style or condition. To work it out for a specific piece, take its gram weight, multiply by the karat’s gold fraction, multiply by the current spot price per gram, then subtract a refiner’s margin. Spot moves daily — look it up on the day rather than working from a figure printed in an article.

Retail vs. Resale

New jewelry depreciates 20–60% immediately upon purchase (retail markup is typically 2–3× wholesale). Typical resale recovery: 30–60% of retail. Exceptions: prestigious makers, antique/vintage pieces, certified gemstones.

Price Per Gram Framework

Divide the retail price by the gold weight in grams to compare value across pieces. A heavier 14K piece at a lower price per gram often holds value better than a lighter 18K piece at a higher price per gram.

Gold vs. Bullion

Step 2: Check construction
