Every oval carries a bow tie. It is the dark band that lies across the middle of an elongated brilliant, roughly the shape its name suggests, and it exists because pavilion facets in that zone reflect the viewer's own shadow back rather than light. No oval is free of one. Cutting decides whether it is a faint smudge or a stripe.

At five carats it stops being a detail, because the shadow scales with the stone. Symmetry graded Excellent is the line on the report that speaks to it most directly: it says the two halves of the pavilion mirror each other closely enough to keep the bow tie narrow instead of letting it spread across the center of the face.

The other thing to settle at this weight is fit. A stone this large on a 1.50mm band puts most of the ring's mass well above the finger, and a ring carrying weight that high will roll toward the palm if it is sized loose. Sized properly it stays where it belongs, long axis lined up with the finger, which is where an oval does its work.
