A straight line is the least forgiving arrangement you can set diamonds in. Twenty-three round stones running end to end all share one axis, and if a single seat sits a hair high or a degree off, it shows immediately, because a line is the one layout where the eye already knows what the answer should look like before it checks.

0.25 carat total weight is divided across all twenty-three, prong-set rather than channel-set. A channel would run a wall of metal down both flanks of the row and shade the stones from the side; prongs leave those flanks open, which is how a narrow bar of small diamonds still reads bright instead of flat.
