A serpent chain necklace in solid 14K yellow gold, about 8.9 g at 18 inches, closed with a tension clasp. What makes a serpent chain look like poured metal is that there are no holes in it. The elements link so closely that the surface closes into a continuous tube, and light runs along it as an unbroken line instead of sparking at every joint the way an open link chain does.

That construction sets the terms of ownership. It drapes like fabric and follows the neck exactly, and it flexes in its bending plane while resisting twist. It also means a hard kink is permanent, since the surface has nowhere to go once it folds. Hang it up rather than folding it into a pocket and the question never arises.
