A paperclip chain necklace in solid 14K yellow gold with an oval carabiner clasp worn at the front, about 3.9 g at 18 inches. Most clasps are designed to be forgotten, which is why they get put where nobody looks. Turn one to the front and it has to earn the attention, and that is the argument for a carabiner: a solid oval frame with a sprung gate, borrowed from climbing hardware, where the load is taken by the frame rather than by a hooked tongue.

It changes how the necklace is used. The gate opens under a thumb, so this fastens in front of a mirror instead of by feel behind the neck, and it opens wide enough to take a pendant bail or a second chain. The clasp doubles as an anchor point, which no lobster is built to do.
