Neither is the better stone. Lab-grown suits a larger carat weight within a set budget, and arrives IGI graded — with an individual certificate at 0.25 ct and above. Natural suits a preference for a stone formed over geological time; it is not sold certified by default, and a GIA certificate can be provided on request. The choice is one of priority, not quality.

How to Choose a Lab Grown Diamond

Start with the piece rather than the stone, because the two halves of this collection ask different questions. A solitaire engagement ring puts one diamond at the centre, so cut quality decides almost everything about how it reads — a well-cut stone returns more light than a heavier one cut for weight, and the difference is visible across a table. Eternity bands, tennis bracelets and stud earrings are the opposite problem: many small stones, where evenness of colour and the security of each setting matter more than any single grade. That split also explains the carat figures. A solitaire's carat is one stone; on the other three it is total carat weight, the sum of everything set in the piece, which is why a 5 carat bracelet and a 5 carat ring are not comparable objects and are not priced alike. Certification follows the same line: pieces built around stones of 0.25 carat and above ship with their IGI certificate, while the many-stone pieces are IGI graded to the same standard without an individual certificate. Read the figure as a total unless the listing describes a single centre stone.
