A clover pendant necklace in solid 14K yellow gold, a freshwater cultured pearl at its center. It leaves the shell finished, and what comes back to your eye is not light bounced off facets but light that has gone down into layers of aragonite laid one over another and returned diffused. That is why a pearl glows steadily where a diamond flashes, and why it is the one stone that still reads at close range in a badly lit room.

Setting one into a clover puts a round object at the middle of a shape made entirely of curves. Four lobes around a center, each a circle in its own right, meeting at the point where the pearl sits. Nothing on the pendant is flat, which means it has no wrong angle. As it turns on the chain there is no edge for it to vanish into, and it presents very nearly the same silhouette from anywhere in front of you.

The polish on the gold is doing deliberate work against the pearl. Polished metal throws a hard specular highlight and nacre returns a soft broad one, so the two surfaces never compete for the same job. The gold reads as bright and the pearl reads as deep, and the eye separates them without being asked to.
