A 1.33 cttw halo pavé round diamond engagement ring in solid 14K white gold, its natural diamonds led by a 0.97 ct center stone, I (near-colorless) in color and I1 (included) in clarity. Fifty-eight stones weighing 0.36 carat between them are very small stones, and setting them is a different trade from setting one large one. Pave work adds no prongs at all. The setter drills a seat, drops the diamond in, then raises beads of metal out of the surface of the ring with a graver and pushes them over the girdle. The metal holding each stone was already there.

At this scale that is the only honest method. Prongs built for stones this size would be more metal than diamond and the row would go gray. Beads keep the gold below the level of the stones, so the surface reads as light with metal underneath it rather than metal with light in it.

The halo around the 0.97 carat center is doing a different job than a halo on a small stone. At this weight the center needs no help looking large; the ring of pave gives its outline a bright edge, so the diamond does not simply stop where the metal begins.
