Prongs can be rebuilt. A goldsmith retips a worn prong in an afternoon and the ring goes back to work, while a pave bead that wears through takes the surrounding metal with it and the repair becomes a rebuild of the section. On a ring meant to be worn every day for decades, that difference is worth more than it usually gets said at a counter.

Every stone on this band is set that way. The 22 round side diamonds, 0.36 carat between them, each stand in their own prongs with air around the girdle, so light reaches them from the sides and from underneath. A flush-set row of the same weight will always look darker, because the only light available to it is the light arriving from directly above.

The center is a prong-set round of at least 0.97 carat on a classic shank, with a single row of stones running out from it on either side.
