Weight behaves differently at the neck than at the wrist. A heavy bracelet slides; a heavy necklace presses. 22.6 grams around 17 inches of omega band is where a necklace stops resting loosely on skin and begins to be carried by the neck itself, which is the reason a collar of this kind either fits properly or does not work at all.

The omega construction is what makes that weight wearable. Flat segments articulated edge to edge give a band that bends around the neck and stays rigid across its width, so it holds an open curve of its own instead of collapsing into a heap of links. Seventeen inches on an omega is not the same measurement as seventeen inches of chain. It is a circumference the necklace keeps at a fixed diameter, sitting at the base of the throat rather than finding its own way down the chest.

Three rows of diamonds run the face, and the third row is about width rather than sparkle. At conversational distance three parallel lines of small stones merge into one continuous band of light, where a single row reads as a dotted line and, at this gold weight, would look like a wire with stones on it.

There is one of these. It is not a first necklace; it is what somebody buys once the plain gold and the single row are already in the drawer. Solid 14K yellow gold, 22.6 grams, high polish, with the DEEVE lifetime warranty.

Buying Guide

How to Choose a Diamond Necklace

Decide first whether you want the diamonds gathered or scattered. A pendant concentrates them into one motif — a bar, a heart, a chevron, an open circle — and reads as a single deliberate point at the collarbone. A station necklace spreads them along the chain, bezel-set so nothing snags, which is what makes it comfortable under a collar and easy to wear every day. Carat weight behaves differently here than on a ring: at this scale, between 0.05 and 0.49 carats, cut and setting do more for brightness than size does, and a bezel or prong that lifts the stone will out-sparkle a heavier stone set flat. Length is the last call — 16 inches sits at the base of the throat for a pendant worn alone, 18 inches falls just below the collarbone and layers most easily over a plain chain.
