Semi-solid is a term the trade uses and almost never explains. A hollow link is formed from thin tube, which is light and inexpensive and unforgiving, because a dent has nothing behind it to push back out. A fully solid link is heavy and priced accordingly. Semi-solid sits between the two, with more metal than the first and less than the second.

On a Cuban that middle ground is the useful one. The Miami pattern needs width to work, since the links are pressed flat and interlocked tightly so the chain lies as a ribbon, and width in fully solid gold gets heavy fast. At 4.5mm this runs 10.5 grams at the shortest length and 13.3 grams at the longest, across four lengths.

The box clasp is chosen for continuity as much as for strength. It closes flush and carries the same profile as the links, so the line of the chain runs unbroken around the back instead of stopping dead at a piece of hardware. On a Cuban, where the appeal is an uninterrupted ribbon, that is not a detail.

Buying Guide

How to Choose a Gold Chain

Start with the link pattern, since it sets the character of the piece: Cuban lies flat and interlocks in a continuous line, Figaro alternates long and short links for rhythm, Franco weaves a tight V-pattern with a rounded, rope-like profile, and Mariner and paperclip styles open the silhouette up. Width then sets presence — 3–6mm reads refined and layers easily, while 7–11mm makes a statement. Length is the last decision: 18–20 inches sits at the collarbone and suits most necklines, 22–24 inches falls mid-chest, and choker lengths sit close to the neck. Most widths and patterns wear equally well on men and women, and solid 14K gold is the practical choice at every gauge — hard enough for daily wear, with no plating to wear through.
