How big is a 1 carat diamond? A 1 carat round diamond measures about 6.4 mm across when you look down at it on the hand, a 2 carat about 8.1 mm, and a 3 carat about 9.3 mm. Those are the trade's standard face-up diameters for a round brilliant, and they show the first surprise: doubling the weight does not double the size you see. A 5 carat stone is larger again, and an oval of any weight looks longer than a round. This guide walks up the ladder one weight at a time, using the solitaires in our lab-grown diamond engagement rings as the reference.
Carat Is Weight, Not Size
A carat is a unit of weight, one fifth of a gram. What you see on the hand is the face-up outline of the stone, and that grows much more slowly than the weight does, because the extra weight is spread through the depth of the diamond as well as across its top. A stone twice as heavy is nowhere near twice as wide.
Two other things change what a weight looks like. The first is the cut: a stone cut deep carries some of its weight below the setting, where nobody sees it, so two stones of the same weight can face up a few tenths of a millimeter apart. The second is the shape. The figures in this guide are for round brilliants, the shape the trade measures against. Fancy shapes such as the oval vary with their length-to-width ratio, so they are described here in words rather than numbers.
| Carat weight (round) | Approximate face-up diameter |
|---|---|
| 1 ct | about 6.4 mm |
| 1.5 ct | about 7.4 mm |
| 2 ct | about 8.1 mm |
| 3 ct | about 9.3 mm |

How Big Is a 1 Carat Diamond?
A 1 carat round diamond is about 6.4 mm across. On the hand it reads as a clear, defined solitaire: large enough to catch light from across a table, small enough to sit close to the finger and wear every day without catching on sleeves or gloves. It is the weight most people picture when they think of a classic engagement ring.
The same weight cut as an oval looks a little different. An oval is a brilliant cut drawn into a longer outline, so it tends to look larger face-up than a round of the same weight and its length runs along the finger. Our 1 carat oval solitaire sits in a four-prong setting on a 1.50 mm band in 14K white or yellow gold, which keeps the metal slim and lets the stone carry the ring.
Does a 1 carat diamond look small?
Rarely. It looks small only beside much heavier stones, which is why comparisons online can mislead. Seen on its own, on the hand it was chosen for, a well-cut 1 carat stone is unmistakably a diamond ring.
How Big Is a 2 Carat Diamond?
A 2 carat round diamond is about 8.1 mm across. That is the point where a solitaire starts to read as a statement from across a room rather than across a table. The step up from 1 carat is visible at a glance, yet the ring still fits comfortably under most day-to-day routines.
Between the two sits the 1.5 carat, about 7.4 mm across as a round, a weight many people choose when 1 carat feels modest and 2 carats feels like a leap. On the hand, a 2 carat oval solitaire covers more of the finger lengthwise than a 2 carat round, which is part of why the oval is so often chosen at this weight.

How Big Is a 3 Carat Diamond?
A 3 carat round diamond is about 9.3 mm across. It is a bold ring by any measure, and it is the weight where the setting starts to matter as much as the stone: four prongs keep the outline open and let light reach the diamond from the sides, while the slim band keeps the proportions balanced.
Is 3 carats too big?
Not for the person who wants it, and that is the only test that counts. A 3 carat stone suits someone who already wears jewelry with presence, and it suits a longer or broader hand especially well, because the same stone looks larger on a slender finger than on a broad one. If you are unsure, compare it with the 2 carat on the same hand: the difference is about 1.2 mm across as rounds, small on paper and clear in person. Our 3 carat oval solitaire is the same four-prong design as the lighter weights, so the comparison is like for like.
2 carat vs 3 carat diamond
Choose 2 carats when the ring has to work through every part of the day, and 3 carats when the ring is meant to be the first thing people notice. Both are graded G color and VS1 clarity in our solitaires, so the choice between them is about presence on the hand, not quality.
How Big Is a 5 Carat Diamond?
A 5 carat stone sits beyond the standard round-diamond table we quote from, so we do not put a millimeter figure on it. What can be said plainly is how it reads: it covers a large part of the width of most fingers, and as an oval it runs well along the finger toward the knuckle. It is a ring for occasions as much as for every day, and it asks for a little more care with door frames and gym equipment.
A 5 carat oval solitaire is the top of our solitaire ladder. It keeps the same 1.50 mm band and four-prong setting as the 1 carat, which is why the stone, not the metal, does all the talking.

What Changes How Big a Diamond Looks on the Hand
Finger size
The same stone looks larger on a slender finger than on a broad one, because it covers more of the finger's width. If you are buying for someone with fine hands, a lighter weight will still read generously; on a broad hand, the next weight up keeps the same visual balance.
Shape
Elongated shapes such as the oval spread their weight over a longer outline and tend to look larger face-up than a round of the same weight. A round returns the most light; an oval trades a little of that for length.

Band and setting
A slim band makes any stone look larger by contrast, and a four-prong setting shows more of the diamond than a heavier mount. All of our oval solitaires use a 1.50 mm band, so their weights can be compared directly.
Seeing the Size Before You Choose
Numbers help, but the surest way to judge a weight is to see it on a hand at true scale. Look at each ring's photographs with the band width in mind, compare two neighboring weights rather than the smallest and largest, and picture the ring with the jewelry it will be worn beside. If you are still choosing the size of the band itself, our guide to the average ring size for women covers how to find it quietly.
When you are ready, compare the 1 carat, 2 carat, 3 carat and 5 carat ovals side by side in our lab-grown diamond engagement rings. Each solitaire is offered in sizes 3 to 9 in 14K white or yellow gold.
One resize is included with every ring. Resizing takes 1 to 3 weeks once the ring reaches us; you send it to us by UPS at your cost, and we pay to ship it back. Additional resizes after the first are chargeable. For everything else that goes into the ring, from shape to setting, see the carat section of our complete guide to choosing an engagement ring.
